 | Villány is the home of quality wine production! Opportunities given by nature as well as workmanlike and hard work of people living in this region which became one of the best-known wine district in Hungary after the change in the regime have made Villány appreciated and famous. Contemporary certificates prove that the Szende family ( Schwarcz before 1945) were producing wine for as much time as seven generations. Gábor Szende and his wife, Gabriella, have been dealing with grape and wine production independently since 1985 when they were given a quarter of an acre newly planted vineyard with a cellar and equipment as a wedding present. First both of them cultivated the land and had another jobs at the same time when, in 1995, Gabriella became the "host" of their own wine cellar remade of an old press-house which was opened in the main street of cellars in Villány among the first. Gábor was elected " a magistrate of the vineyard" of Villány Municipality by the vine-growers in Villány after spending 13 years in administration. He has been holding the position since then. Their first bottled wines appeared at that time and today as many as 55.000 bottles are produced a year. Love for the grape and wine became their carreer as the territories were growing. They take an important part in wine tourism so the Szende Cellar has developed into a determining point in the Villány-Siklós Wine path. Their children born in 1990 were "infected" by the same profession. Karina occassionally helps her mother with serving the guests while "little" Gábor gets acquainted with the crafts of wine production beside his father. Their first common sort of wine, a "Kékoportó" made in 2003, was awarded a gold medal at the Villány Wine Contest in 2004. True, just 328 bottles were made of it. |
